Two persons were killed and many others were injured after heavy rains and storms that have lashed Assam on Friday.
The incident occurred at Deupani tea estate when a devastating storm, with a speed of about 80-90 km per hour, swept the area, accompanied by heavy rains. The victim was asleep when the tree fell, flattening the tin roof house.
The deceased has been identified as Mahan Sasoni.
In an another incident, One person was killed by lightning at Demow in Sivasagar district.
The thunderstorm lashed various parts of eastern and western Assam also, blowing away roofs of houses, uprooting trees and electric poles, leading to disruption of power supply in several places across Assam.
The storm lasted for about 2 hours, leaving a trail of destruction in most parts of state. The storm was accompanied by heavy rains.
The major affected areas are Bokajan, Nagaon, Golagahat, Siphajhar and Gohpur.
According to reports, the storm damaged over 100 houses in Gospora, Balikuchi, Bhaksang and Laupani villages.
Road communication was severely disrupted in several areas.
The meteorological office had warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and squall over the next couple of days at isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya.
