The Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday described Assam as a beautiful State with dutyfull people and colourful arts. He also said, “Assam and the rest of North Eastern States are known for their rich culture, traditions, literature, folk arts and of course the breathtaking scenic locales,” during his speech at ‘Achiever Awards’ ceremony organised by Sadin-Pratidin group at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati and conferred the Awards on 10 eminent personalities as well as organizations.

He said, “English language is necessary, but mother tongue is most important. I feel proud to know that you the people of Assam respect your culture, traditions, folk arts and literature.” The Vice President complimented the Sadin-Pratidin Group for instituting the awards to recognize the achievements of individuals from different professions. The Vice President appealed media houses like Sadin-Pratidin group, to conduct campaigns and competitions on issues such as Swachh Bharat to promote awareness on cleanliness and sanitation.

During his speech the Vice President said, “Sadin-Pratidin group believes, media plays a very vital role in the development of any state/community; thus it stands obligated to social and moral obligations towards Assamese community.”

While appreciating Sadin-Pratidin group for recognizing excellence in different fields, the Vice President appealed media houses like Sadin-Pratidin group, to “conduct campaigns and competitions on issues such as Swachh Bharat to promote awareness on cleanliness and sanitation.”

“Awareness should also be created on fighting various challenges confronting the nation such as growing atrocities on women, dangers of drug and alcohol addiction, casteism, religious fundamentalism, corruption, illiteracy and terrorism,” Vice President Naidu added.

The Vice President asked the media to avoid sensationalism and report news without coloring with views. “Media must always be free, fair and objective to champion the cause of the underdogs,” he said.
