State Minister of Welfare of plain tribes and backward classes, Pramila Rani Brahma told the Assembly that the Assam government is sending proposals to the Centre to include the state’s six ethnic communities in the Scheduled Tribe (Plains) list.

The six ethnic communities to be considered are Chutia, Tai Ahom, Moran, Matak, Koch Rajbongshi and Tea Tribe.

Brahma added that at present, the idea of granting ST status to the six communities is being studied by the Centre and the State Government has been holding meetings with the committee that was set up for working out the modalities on it.

The state government has been extending cooperation to the Centre on this issue, though the committee is yet to submit its report on the matter.
