Assam’s Bihu Suraksha Samiti on Sunday announced new guidelines for the upcoming Rongali Bihu celebration in the state. The guidelines are mainly targeted on the performing artists and organizers of Bihu cultural nights.

The Samiti set a few rules and guidelines regarding the dresses, songs, artists’ payment, organizers etc. This comes after years of controversy over Bihu programs across the state and artists and organizers often getting into arguments over payment and selection of songs.

The Samiti has set a rule that no western attires, other than traditional dresses, can be worn by artists on stage during their performances. The Samiti has also objected on artists demanding extra money for their performances, thus limiting the amount of payment for each artits. The Samiti also asked the singers to be careful with their selection of songs.

The guidelines have been sent to every Bihu organizing committee and have been asked to call curtains on cultural nights at 12 AM sharp. Along with the artists, the Samiti has asked Bihu organizers to pay more attention when it comes to payment of local Bihu dancers or groups.

However, a lot of criticism has also come in following the announcement. Famous singer from the State Jublee Baruah has raised concerns over a few guidelines and told that it is objectionable if an artist is forced to wear a certain dress or attire.
