The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati which is spread over 50 acres is gearing up for a makeover. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister for Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju laid foundation stone for the project.

State government stated, "The city side of the building will be aesthetically landscaped with lush green areas. It will have green areas within and outside connecting passengers to nature. A small internal forest feature, bamboo artifact and a craft village are integrated into the overall design, highlighting the rich ethos and culture of the Northeastern region of India." The makeover is aimed at showcasing the rich heritage of the region.

Design Forum International, an award-winning architectural consultancy firm is given the task of beautifying the Airport. The firm plans to take the inspiration from Icarus, the epitome of the human urge to fly and traditional Japanese art of paper folding, Origami. The main focus will be on sustainability and to equip passengers with world-class facilities. The building will conform to GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) 4-star rating.

The new terminal will have 64 check-in counters, 20 self-check-in booths, 8 Immigration and custom counters, 6 arrival carousels, 10 escalators, 25 elevators, 16 self-baggage drop counters and 20 aircraft parking bays among other facilities.
