Situation in Assam has now continued to get worse and life threatening as fresh wave of floods in the state has affected over 11 lakh people in 21 districts. Till today morning, 14 people lost their life due to the havoc caused by the floods.

Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts have been the worst affected by the fresh wave of floods following the one last month.

The second round of floods was caused by incessant rain in the adjoining states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya, and neighbouring Bhutan. Till Saturday it had inundated over 1,750 villages in 19 districts, with Dhubri being worst affected. Official reports said while 2 lakh people have been affected in Dhubri, the number was 1.3 lakh in Bongaigaon and 1.1 lakh in Kokrajhar.

Meanwhile, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has called for for intensifying relief and rescue operations. Sonowal has directed chief secretary V.K. Pipersenia to hold a video conference and talk to deputy commissioners of the affected districts to assess the intensity of the situation and undertake relief and rescue operations, a government release said.
