Guwahati is all set to dismantle the 47-year old distorted Mahatma Gandhi statue made by Ram Kinkar Baij. The Gandhi statue, unveiled by then Assam chief minister Bishnu Ram Medhi on October 2, 1970, stands in the garden of the Gandhi Mandap atop the 200-metre Sarania Hill in the heart of city.

The city’s heritage structure Gandhi Mandap will be refurbished and developed under the Smart City Project, which will include work on landscaping, illumination and setting up of a yoga centre.

This decision was taken today at a meeting of the Mahatma Gandhi & Martyrs’ Memorial Trust and the Gandhi Mandap Trust here under the chairmanship of Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu.

“The statue of Mahatma Gandhi, which was sculpted long back gives a distorted image of Mahatma Gandhi. Therefore the meeting has decided to sculpt another statue and replace the old one,” said Kamrup (Metropolitan) deputy commissioner M Angamuthu who also chaired the meeting on one of the resolutions taken

The meeting was attended by Minister for Sports, Culture and Panchayat & Rural Development Naba Doley, MLA of Guwahati East constituency Siddhartha Bhattacharya, GMC Mayor Mrigen Saraniya and noted social worker RD Borkotoky.
