Assam, the land of agriculture and natural jewels, produces a variety of fruits, herbs, vegetables and other nature made goods and the land has now newly received Geographical Indication (GI) rights by the GI Registry of India for two of its natural products, ginger and litchi. With the reception of this acclamation and recognition by the GI registry of India, the state is hoped to prosper in terms of the production and export of the two products.

The ginger produced in the Singhasan Hill of Karbi Anglong district and the litchi produced at Lichu Pukhuri in Tezpur town and at Porowa near this north bank district headquarter town of Sonitpur are the two products to win the GI rights. So now, after the GI Registry, the serial number for GI registration of Karbi Anglong ginger is 226 and its application number is 435, and the serial number of Tezpur litchi is 230 and its application number is 438.

Along with Assam registering two of its products in the GI registration, other states from the North-eastern region have also get a few of their agricultujral products registers. These include- the Naga Tree Tomato of Nagaland, Arunachal Orange of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim Large Cardamom of Sikkim, Mizo Chilli of Mizoram, Tripura Queen Pineapple of Tripura, Khasi Mandarin of Meghalaya and Kachai Lemon of Manipur.

Assam is a forerunner in the production of ginger and the Karbi Anglong district especially produces two varieties of ginger-Nadia with high fibre and Aizol with less or no fibre. Similarly, for the production of Litchi, about 400 bighas of land are covered for litchi farming at Porowa.
