Political and non-political groups around the State have raged with anger after Mamata Banerjee’s controversial remarks on NRC. Reacting to the advert statement, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi questioned on Wednesday, why should the Bengali people of the State will go to West Bengal? Assam is their land and they have the right to be here, said the senior Congress leader.

On the other hand, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) condemned the West Bengal Minister’s announcement. They warned her not to play dirty politics with the old tricks of divide and rule. Meanwhile, MP from Tezpur RP Sharma, back lashed the West Bengal “Agnikanya” (Fire Goddess). According to the MP, “There is no need of the West Bengal Chief Minister in Assam rather she should be worried about her own State.” The Tezpur MP stated that his party would take care of the people of Assam and they will protect the Bengali community of the State.

Previously, on Tuesday the West Bengal Chief Minister announced that her State is ready to welcome those Bengalis of Assam who were excluded from the first draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and demanded suitable reason from the Centre on why such issue took place (the names of 1 crore Bengali people of Assam remained excluded from the first list of NRC). She had also offered her hands to the people who, perhaps, “In near future will be forced to leave the State.”

Addressing a public meeting in Alipurduar district, the West Bengal CM had claimed that “It is a scheme of BJP to throw the Bengalis out of Assam.” Along with the Bengalis she had also mentioned about the people from Bihar who have not found their names in the first list of the draft published in the midnight of 31 December.
