In some major announcement made today while addressing the ASEAN-INDIA Connectivity Summit in New Delhi, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the Government is aiming to construct 40 kilometres of road every day in the country by 2018.

The minister added that India has made significant strides as far as construction of National Highways are concerned and the Government is focusing on road, shipping and digital network to increase business relations with ASEAN nations

Gadkari said that recently the Centre has approved construction of over 34 thousand kilometres of road network over the next five years under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. River and port connectivity is very important for boosting trade and investment in India as well as in the ASEAN region, he added.

Minister of State for External Affairs Gen V K Singh, who was also present at the summit, stressed on reestablishing the connectivity between India and ASEAN countries as it was in the past. He said there is a strong case for improving maritime connectivity between Indian and ASEAN islands.
