The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi today said India has ignored the importance of Swami Vivekanand’s historic address at Chicago in 1893.

Narendra Modi said before 2001, the world did not know the importance of 9/11, which is the date when Swami Vivekananda delivered his famous 1893 Chicago speech. He said had India not forgotten its own 9/11, the 2001 catastrophe could have been avoided. Prime Minister Modi addressed a gathering of students in New Delhi today on the theme of ‘Young India, New India’.

Earlier in a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said, the convention of students is being held to mark the historic address of Swami Vivekananda delivered at Chicago in 1893. Modi said, this year, the country is marking 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address and Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya centenary celebrations.

The Prime Minister said, Swami Vivekananda strongly believed in the power of Yuva Shakti and saw a vital place for youngsters in the realm of nation building.

Modi said, inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, the government is working tirelessly towards realising the dreams and aspirations of the youth of the country.

“There is no better place for creativity and innovation than university campuses,” Modi said adding, “Student organisations, while campaigning for university elections should give more importance to cleanliness.”
