Right-wing activist Swami Aseemanand and four other accused were today acquitted by a special anti-terror court in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case. The court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove charges against them.

The court today acquitted the following accused from the case: Swami Aseemanand alias Naba Kumar Sarkar, Devendra Gupta, Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar alias Bharat Bhai, Lokesh Sharma and Rajendra Chowdhary.

"The prosecution failed to prove allegations against the five accused who faced trial in the case and hence the court acquitted them," Aseemanand's counsel, J P Sharma, told reporters after the verdict.

A massive blast had ripped through the Mecca Masjid on May 18, 2007, during Friday prayers in Hyderabad, killing nine people and wounding 58.
