At a time when even mobile SIM services have asked the customers to link their numbers with their Aadhaar card, threats regarding Identity theft have become a major fear to the common people.

Social media has shown much interest on the Chandigarh-headquartered ‘The Tribune’, that prepared an exclusive news report on the digital theft, “Rs 500, 10 minutes, and you have access to billion Aadhaar details”. The paper reported that they “purchased” a service offered to them by anonymous sellers over WhatsApp, by paying only Rs. 500 that provided them with unlimited access to details of any of more than 1 billion Aadhaar numbers in only 10 minutes.

Whereas, the government has frequently consoling the people by saying that, “Aadhaar data, including biometric information is fully safe and secure”. Reacting to The Tribune exclusive story the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had claimed it was a case of “misreporting”, and that Aadhaar is free of any kind of identity theft and labeled the Tribune story as Fake.

Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered against ‘The Tribune’ newspaper and its journalist for the above mentioned report that was published earlier this week.
