To elect the next Vice President of India, voting is currently underway, which will conclude at 5 PM. The counting votes will take place after 5 PM. Till 3 PM 761 out of 785 votes were polled in the election.

In the election, there is a straight fight between NDA’s candidate M Venkaiah Naidu and Opposition nominee Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

Naidu previously has served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Information and Broadcasting under the Narendra Modi Cabinet. On the other hand, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the opposition nominee is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and a former IAS officer. Gandhi also served as the 22nd Governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009.

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both the Houses of Parliament including nominated members.

Meanwhile, NDA nominee Venkaiah Naidu has a clear edge over his rival Gopalkrishna Gandhi in 790 member electoral college.

The term of present incumbent Vice President Hamid Ansari comes to an end on the 10th of August.

The Vice President of India is the exofficio chairperson of the Rajya Sabha and functions as its speaker. He also assumes the post of the President of India in case a vacancy and stays in the post for a maximum period of six months and performs all the functions of the President. The Vice President also has a term of five years.
