The two-day informal ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) got underway in New Delhi today with participation of representatives from 50 countries. According to reports, the WTO is facing systemic challenges, particularly its dispute settlement arm.

The informal meeting is expected to provide an opportunity to engage in free and frank discussions leading to political guidance on some of the major issues, both at the negotiating table and also in other areas.

It is hoped that the meeting in New Delhi will provide an opportunity to the ministers to explore the various options on different issues in greater details, for re-strengthening the WTO.

It may be mentioned that the eleventh ministerial conference was organised on December last year in Buenos Aires. However, the conference was devoid of ministerial guidance.
