46 Muslim clerics of Assam issued a ‘fatwa’ against singer Nahid Afrin. The 16-year-old singer gained popularity through the famous reality TV show Indian Idol.
The ‘fatwa’ was issued as Nahid was invited to perform at a programme at Udali Sonai Bibi College in Lanka under Hojai district of Assam on March 25. The clerics in the leaflets said that performance by Nahid is "against the Sharia".
Nahid, a Class X student who lives in Biswanath Chariali, said that she will perform if her parents and the people want her to sing. She broke down in front of the journalists while speaking on the issue.
Many organizations and artists have condemned the incident.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned on putting restrictions on Nahid. “We strongly condemn putting restrictions on performance by young talented singer Nahid Afrin by some organizations,” Sonowal said.
Sonowal spoke to Nahid over phone and assured all possible support. He also said that Assam government is committed to provide security to the artists.
