In response to the shortage of officers and other employees in the armed forces of India, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has recommended five-year compulsory military service for government job aspirants.

It must be noted that over 60,000 posts are vacant in the Air Force, Army and Navy. Statistical reports have revealed that around 20,000 posts are vacant in the Air Force, 27,000 in the Army and over 15,000 in the Navy.

The standing committee believes that the five-year military service shall not only fill up the vacant posts but also bring disciplinary reforms among the employees.

It may be mentioned that the Defence Ministry had earlier sent a recommendation to the Department of Personnel and Training to make military service compulsory for five years for both central and state government job aspirants.

The panel has however alleged that the ministry has not taken up the matter with due seriousness.
