The All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Saturday blocked the national highways in all districts across the State in protest against the tumbledown condition of the roads. AASU also demanded recognition to the flood and erosion problems of the State as the national ones and asked steps from the governments for their permanent solution.

Members of the students’ organization blocked the national highways in all the districts of the State for one hour since 12 noon. Emergency services like medical and ambulance services were exempted from it.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi voiced against Sarbananda Sonowal, who was previously given the title of ‘Jatiya Nayak’ by the organization, and his government. The president and the general secretary of AASU said that the lamentable state of the roads, including the national highways, has made the communication-links of the common people in the State very complicated.

Stating the State government’s excuse to repair as disgraceful, AASU said, would not refrain from its agitational programmes until the condition of the roads all over the State is improved. It is worth mentioning that the State government has been citing scarcity of stone chips as the cause for its failure to repair the roads.

The AASU also alleged that the State government did not provide adequate relief to the flood affected people this year. It said these people were also deprived of medical treatment, while domestic animals were not provided with the required amount of fodder as well as veterinary care. They also said that the government has not yet announced any schemes or programmes for the relief of the farmers who were affected by the floods.

There is no step taken to repair the flood-damaged buildings of the educational institutions and supply textbooks to the flood-affected students, alleged AASU.

AASU said the Centre has done complete injustice to the people of Assam so far as the flood and erosion are concerned. The students’ organization repeated its demand that the Centre must declare Assam’s flood and erosion as national problems and take steps for their permanent solution.
