Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani has said that NRC updation will create Myanmar like situation in Assam. Madani’s remark came at the moment, when NRC updation has been going on in the State following the orders of Supreme Court. Madani in a meeting organised by Delhi Action Committee for Assam (DACA) on Monday delivered this controversial remark in front of Dr. Hiren Gohain, professor Apurba Barua, professor Abdul Manna, senior advocate Hafiz Rashid Choudhury, senior journalist Haider Hussain, Manjit Mahanta and other dignitaries.

Madini said, “People who are not Indian and making deliberate efforts for enlisting their names in the NRC will be pushed out of India.” “But the Muslim women, whose families have been staying for 400 years, they won’t be pushed away as Bangladeshi,” he added. “The NRC should be updated based on humanity and not religion. Or else, the country will get destroyed,” the Jamiat leader further said.

According to government statistics, more than 48 lakh people in Assam have used panachayat certificates as linkage documents and the Supreme Court is presently hearing the plea on the validity of panchayat certificate issue. Comparing the situation with Rohingyas in Myanmar, the Jamiat leader said, it was the question of 7-8 lakh Rohingyas in Myanmar while in Assam around 75 lakh Indian citizens including 48 lakh women will be affected by the issue.

Speaking further Maulana Madani insisted that the state government strictly adheres to the Assam Accord, framed in 1985, while the issue of citizenship is being decided. As per the accord, anyone who entered Assam on or before March 24, 1971, is deemed as an Indian citizen.

Meanwhile, after the meeting, reacting to the remark of Maulana Arshad Madani, Dr. Hiren Gohain described it as his (Maulana Arshad Madani’s) own. Dr. Gohain also mentioned not to create fire from the heat of NRC.

Senior leader of CPI (M), Sitaram Yechury speaking in the meeting, said that panchayat documents should be accepted as legal documents.
