In a shocking turn of events for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the recently held Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by-elections did not yield expected results for the saffron party. The BJP lost the Lok Sabha seats of Gorakhpur, which had been vacated by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Phulpur, which was earlier held by UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, to the Samajwadi Party.

Samajwadi Party candidate Praveen Kumar Nishad defeated BJP candidate Upendra Dutta Shukla at Gorakhpur with a margin of 21,881 votes. It may be mentioned that in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Yogi Adityanath had won from Gorakhpur, which is the CM’s home constituency, with a margin of around 3 lakh votes.

At Phulpur, Samajwadi Party’s Nagendra Singh Patel defeated his BJP counterpart with a margin of 59,613 votes. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya had won from the constituency with a margin of more than 5 lakh votes.

In Bihar, RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) candidate Sarfaraz Alam defeated BJP’s Pradeep Kumar Singh for the Araria Lok Sabha seat.

It may be mentioned that out of the 16 by-polls conducted till date since the BJP’s victory in 2014, the saffron party has lost 14, winning only two.
