At a time when the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is taking this corner of the country by storm, it has also evoked reactions across the border. The process which has been implemented with the intention to identify illegal migrants and ensure the status of the indigenous people of state will effectively weed out the people of Bangladeshi origin, who sneaked into the state post 25 March, 1971.

As such, the political who-is-who of Bangladesh have expressed their concerns regarding the updation process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the neighboring state. The Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has assured that steps will be taken to address the Assam Government’s move. “We are aware that the Assam government is creating a list of illegal Bangladeshis. If any problems arise, we will address the issue with New Delhi,” Obaidul said during a press conference in the secretariat marking New Year ’s Eve.

Moreover, he also said that the two states have already worked towards mutual harmony and several Bangladeshis who had been identified as migrating illegally into Assam and have served their punishments thereafter have been always tried to be brought back to Bangladesh. He added that the Bangladesh Government is keenly following the developments in this regard and will take adequate action when required.
