Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister for Civil Aviation P Ashok Gajapathi Raju laid the foundation stone for the new integrated terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airportin Guwahati on Sunday. The new terminal building will conform to GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) 4-star rating which will be developed at a cost of Rs. 1,237 crore.

Raju in his address said, “The airport has registered a 36 per cent increase in passenger traffic during 2016-17, more than the national average growth rate of 17.5 per cent.” He hoped the new terminal would be ready for use by 2020 so that it can cater to the growing number of passengers.

“Improvement of air transport in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir is a priority area for the Centre. Hence, steps are being taken to improve the capacity of airports,” Raju added.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assured that the new terminal would be completed by 36 months. “This new terminal will help Assam to emerge as the hub of business activities with the ASEAN countries by providing better connectivity. The Government of India and government of Assam will jointly work in developing this terminal and build Guwahati as the gateway to South East Asia in the truest sense,” the CM said.
