The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) on Wednesday held a rally at the Lakhidhar Bora Kshetra on the bank of Dighalipukhuri, in support of its demand for unconditional release of leader Akhil Gogoi, who has been booked under the National Security Act (NSA) by the government for his alleged provocation to take up arms, at a public meeting on September 12.

The rally was addressed, among others, by noted social worker and Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey, noted intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain, journalist Haider Hussain, senior advocate Hafiz Rashid Choudhury, CPI State Committee secretary Munin Mahanta, CPI-ML State secretary Rubul Sarma, All Tai Ahom Students’ Union president Litul Burhagohain and AAMSU secretary Ainuddin Ahmed.

Speaking on the occasion, Sandeep Pandey said, “Akhil has been fighting for the rights of the people. There are a few people who actually fight for the rights of the people.” He said the government which has arrested Akhil and slapped sedition charges on him is “more seditious” than him.

On the other hand, Hiren Gohain said Akhil’s statement was just a warning to the government. “The state government has arrested Akhil who never took up arms. But the same government has said that RSS's arms training in Hojai district was for self-defence.” He also said, “The Supreme Court has warned of judicious use of the National Security Act. In case of Akhil Gogoi, the act has been misused.”

Meanwhile, several KMSS and Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) members were detained, while coming towards the mass gathering, at various parts of the State. Goalpara police detained members of the organisations from Ananda Bazar area near railway station in Goalpara. In Majdia, Barpeta, police detained members of KMSS from two buses.

KMSS decided to continue its opposition against the Centre’s decision to give citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis who have entered the country after March 24, 1971, and construction of big dams in the Northeast among others.
