  • Lack of funds slows NRC updation process

After the Centre has applied for seven month extension in the Supreme Court to publish the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), it is quite clear that Assam government itself does not want to complete the NRC updation process in time. Government has not yet provided required funds to various centers in the State.

NRC centers in various areas in the State are even not getting a single pencil to complete the updation process. The employees engaging in NRC updation are not getting minimum required facilities to complete the work. They are even pressurized to work day and night. The NRC centers in the State even lack paper, pen, pencil, eraser, stamp, printers, tonners etc. The centers do not even have adequate generator facilities to run computers and the centers; on the other hand, the centers which have generator facilities do not have funds to buy fuel to run the generators.

According to some NRC employees, their work load increased after the Supreme Court had announced that draft NRC will be published before 31st December. The employees said that they have been working in Saturdays, Sundays and other holydays for 12 hours from 8 AM to 8 PM. They have not got any financial assistance for their works since last two years.

Besides, data entry operators are also not getting their salaries since last two months. Though the NRC authorities have claimed that they received Rs. 750 crore of total Rs. 908 crore for the updation of NRC, but lack of minimum requirements in the NRC centers have sent the whole process into a mysterious situation.
