In an unfortunate development, a wildly stringent situation has erupted in the Dhula region of Darrang district following the death of a 40-year old labourer Hassen Ali in the custody of police. As the news of his death broke and spread through the area like wildfire, thousands of locals under the leadership of AMSU and concerned citizens of the area took to the streets and blocked the National Highway No. 15.

The protest that ensued was rife with slogans such as “Arrest Dhula OC Ranjit Hazarika”, “Investigate the murder of Hassen Ali” and “Assam Police Murdabad” as the protestors even indulged in attacking the civilian as well as the paramilitary forces’ vehicles in resentment over the alleged murder. Receiving the information of such developments, the Deputy Commissioner of the district along with the Additional Deputy Commissioner(s), Superintendent of Police, Additional Superintendent of Police and the Officer-in-charge of Kharupetia Police Station arrived onto the scene to pacify the protestors.

The administrative officials indulged in a discussion with the ring-leaders of the protests. The Officer-in-Charge of Dhula Police Station Ranjit Hazarika has been suspended from duty as the administration has assured that the family of Hassen Ali will get the justice that it deserves. Thereafter, the Deputy Commissioner requested the agitators to call off the roadblock. Likewise, AMSU General Secretary and other ring-leaders of the protest rallied the same to the masses. They have also clarified their stand that they would not accept the dead body of Hassen Ali till Ranjit Hazarika is not arrested.

However, the raging agitators paying no heed to such requests; broke into the Police Station at 11 AM. Faced with such a situation, the police resorted to the use of tear gas and lathi-charge. However, as the protestors could not be abated by the same and it resulted in the protestors pelting bricks and stones at the police. This led to the injuries sustained by Kharupetia OC, Chandan Goswami and the DSP of police and constables Chandi Baishya, Arunjyoti Deka and Babul Sut. With no option out, they first fired up into the open air and then onto the protestors in an effort to break the agitation. The police operation also resulted in severely injuring three protestors namely Moidul Islam (28), Gule Rehena (18) and Mustafa Ali (40).

As the reporter of Sadin-Pratidin Group informed the Deputy Commissioner of the district of such mishappenings, he made arrangements for the injured persons’ treatment at the Mangaldoi Civil Hospital. However, Moidul Islam died of his bullet wounds that he received on his back. The post-mortem of his body has been completed and it has been handed over to his family in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner. The AMSU along with the locals have demanded financial assistance to his family.

Earlier, Hassen Ali was arrested for possession of deadly weapons following a raid at the middle of the night under the command of OC Ranjit Hazarika. His uncle Rustom Ali has alleged that the OC’s troops have had began to assault him since the moment they took him under custody and he also alleged that the OC had murdered Hassen Ali. The father of five, he had been working as a labourer in Karnataka and was set to return back to Karnataka.
