At a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had recently sweeped the Northeast in the recent elections, thousands of farmers have marched into Mumbai on Sunday demanding for a complete loan waiver. The number of farmers is more than 35,000 and has been increasing since they have entered Mumbai.

The march started on March 06 at Nasik and the farmers reached Mumbai on Sunday after covering a distance of more than 160 kms.

After the left rule came to an end in Tripura after 25 years, this protest that came alive in Maharashtra on CPI (M)’s request which has put the Fadnavis led BJP Maharashtra Government in severe thoughts.

The Government has also taken up steps to control the crowd; security has been beefed up across the city. CM Fadnavis has given State Minister Girish Mahajan the responsibility to start talks with the leaders of the protest.

The march organised by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) also includes the wives and children of farmers in the protest. It must be noted that the state government had earlier announced a loan waiver worth Rs 35 crore. However, the AIKS has alleged that the government has put up the condition of waiving only a part.

Leaders of the protest have also alleged the government of taking away lands of the tribal people for construction of super highway and tracks for Bullet Train. The Maharashtra Congress as well as the Shiv Sena have extended their support to the farmers.
