The historic Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been launch at the stroke of midnight hour of Friday. While Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors reduced the prices of some vehicles, in others several cities and towns, shops did not conduct any business and merchants and traders came out on the streets to protest against the new tax system.

In Tamil Nadu, around 1,100 cinema owners have called for an indefinite strike from Monday. Multiplex theatres in the state have suspended online booking for the weekend.

Leaders of the Samajwadi Party on the other hand tried to block the Ganga Gomti Express train near Allahabad on Saturday morning to protest against the implementation of the indirect tax GST.

Merchants and dealers of Indore also protested against the complex nature of the new tax regime. Over 200 merchant associations from across the city representing various sectors like, cloth market, electric market, grains market and plywood observed complete shutdown.

A majority of cloth shops in the home state of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat, remained shut on Saturday. Around 2.5-3 lakh cloth merchants in the state extended their support to the ongoing protest.

Meanwhile, protesters burned effigy during a protest against GST in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Disabled people on Friday also organised a candle light vigil against the GST on their helping aids and appliances and demanded subsidies, concessions and incentives.
