England lifted their first-ever FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the final played at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata last night. England produced a memorable come-from-behind performance to outplay European Champions Spain 5-2.

The winners came back from a two-goal deficit to pump in five goals in-front of a capacity crowd of more than 66,000, which happens to be the most attended in the history of the tournament. Spain had led 2-1 at half-time.

England, who were playing their maiden Under-17 World Cup final, have now done a FIFA double in the same year, having won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in June. Spain have now featured as losing finalists on four occasions. They had earlier lost in the summit clash in 1991, 2003, and 2007.

While striker Sergio Gomez netted both the goals for Spain, the goal-scorers for England were Phil Fodden, who netted twice, Rhian Brewster, Morgan Gibbs White and Marc Guehi.

England’s Rhian Brewster won the ‘Golden Boot’ with 8 goals to his credit.

Earlier in the day, at the same venue, three-time former Champions Brazil won the Bronze medal by defeating Mali 2-0 in the third-place playoff match between the two losing semi-finalists. Mali were runners-up in the last edition held in Chile.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated England on winning the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. In a tweet, Modi also congratulated Spain for a spirited game. He said, FIFA Under-17 World Cup was a celebration of football, witnessing wonderful games. The Prime Minister said, India was honoured and delighted to host the tournament.
