India today thrashed Sri Lanka by 304 runs in their opening Test at Galle to witness the biggest overseas win in terms of runs. With this win, India surpassed 279 run-victory against England at Leeds in 1986.

Also for Sri Lanka, it has become their biggest defeat in terms of runs, surpassing their 301-run loss against Pakistan in 1994.

Earlier, the hosts finished their second innings at 245 in 76.5 overs. This was after India captain Virat Kohli struck his 17th Test hundred with India declaring their second innings at 240 for three.

India took a huge first innings lead of 309 runs when the Sri Lankan were all out for 291 in reply to India’s 600. Shikhar Dhawan was declared the Man of the Match, while Ravichandran Aswin was given a special award for playing his 50th Test.

With this win India lead three-match series by 1-0.
