India have won against Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the first of the five match ODI series in Dambulla, the last night. The visitors achieved the victory target of 217 runs with 127 balls remaining. An outstanding century of unbeaten 128 by Shikhar Dhawan and 82 not out by skipper Virat Kohli wrapped up the match hurriedly.

Earlier, India winning the toss opted to bowl first and reduced Sri Lanka for 216 in 43.2 overs. Opener Niroshan Dickwella top scored for the Lankans with his 64-run while Angelo Mathews remained not out at 36. For India left-arm spinner Axar Patel took three wickets. Kedar Jadhav, Y Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah captured two wickets each.

India had recently white-washed the 3-match Test series against the host and will be looking to take that momentum into the limited-overs’ leg of the tour as well.

On the other hand, the ODI series is more than just avenging the Test defeat for Sri Lanka. They need two more wins to confirm their spot in the 2019 ODI World Cup by way of direct qualification.
