Paralympic javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia and former Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh have been selected to be awarded the country’s highest honour for sportspersons, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards.

The awards selection committee headed by Justice (Retd) C K Thakkar recommended both Devendra Jhajharia and Sardar Singh to be considered for the award jointly.

Two-time Paralympic gold-medallist, Devendra Jhajharia became the first paralympian to be recommended for India’s highest sporting honour. On the other hand, Sardar Singh, the Indian defensive mid-fielder, previously was awarded Padma Shri in 2015.

Along with the Khel Ratna awards, the selection committee also recommended 17 names for the Arjuna awards this year. Cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara and Harmanpreet Kaur; Paralympic medallists Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Bhati and golfer SSP Chawrasia among 17 Arjuna awradees.
