South Africa has won the Cape Town Cricket Test against India by 72 runs. Chasing a victory target of 208 runs on day four of the first match of the series, India were all out for 135 runs in their second innings.

Except for the eighth wicket partnership between R Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India’s batting collapsed against swing and bounce on a spicy Newlands surface. Ashwin top scored with 37 runs followed by skipper Virat Kohli who made 28. For South Africa, Matt Philander picked up six wickets.

Previously, Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah made full use of seaming conditions to raise hopes of an India win in South Africa. Shami and Bumrah shared three wickets each in the morning session on day-four, affecting a South African to collapse in which they lost 8 wickets for only 65 to be bowled out for 130 in the second innings. The hosts had resumed their innings at their overnight score of 65 for 2.

On day one, South Africa was bowled out for 286 runs in the first innings. On day two, India finished with 209 runs in their first innings, surrendering a 77-run lead. Day three was completely washed out due to persistent rain.
