Austria's law banning face veils such as burkhas or niqabs comes into effect from today. The government said that acceptance and respect of Austrian values are basic conditions for successful cohabitation between the majority Austrian population and people from third countries living in Austria.

The new law states that faces must be visible from hairline to chin in public places and includes off-slope ski masks and surgical masks outside of hospitals.

There are around 7 lakh Muslims in Austria, which has a population of about eight million.

Austrian police are allowed to use force to make people show their face and can impose fines of 150 Euros (INR 11,568).

It also said that exemptions under certain conditions include items like clown disguises at cultural events, work wear such as medical masks, and scarves in cold weather.
