India asked Myanmar that the situation in Rakhine state be handled with restraint. India has advised Myanmar to handle the affairs with maturity focusing on the welfare of civilian population alongside those of the security forces.

External Affairs Ministry said in a statement that it is imperative that violence is ended and normalcy in the state restored expeditiously. “India remains deeply concerned about situation in Rakhine State and outflow of refugees from that region,” the statement further said.

The External Affairs Ministry also said, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi recent visit to Myanmar, he had expressed his concern at the causalities of security forces as well as other innocent life. “He had also urged a solution based on respect for peace, communal harmony, justice, dignity and democratic values,” the Ministry said.

Earlier, it was agreed that India will provide assistance under the Rakhain state development programme in conjunction with the government of Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Rohingya Muslim insurgents in Myanmar have declared a one-month unilateral ceasefire to ease the humanitarian crisis in northern Rakhine state. Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) said the truce will start today. ARSA also urged army of Mynamar to lay down weapons as well. Previously on last month, ARSA’s attacks on police triggered a response by the military.
