Anti-dam protests resume in Lakhimpur, AJYCP burns effigies of Sarbananda Sonowal
Widespread public protests erupted in Lakhimpur, spearheaded by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad on Sunday against the construction of the 2000 MG Lower Subansiri Dam in Gerukamukh.
Over thousands of members took to the street in Lakhimpur to voice against the BJP in power and the National Hydro Power Corporation.
Supporters of AJYCP have erected blockades throughout the route that the turbine-carrying trucks are likely to take enroute to Gerukamukh.
They burned effigies of Prime Minster Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The NHPC project in Gerukamukh has been facing stiff opposition in Assam, as people in the downstream areas have maintained that the big dam will have a devastating effect on their lives and livelihood.
