Protests against big dams reignite in Assam
Widespread public protests erupted in Lakhimpur, spearheaded by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad and Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti on Thursday against the construction of the 2000 MG Lower Subansiri Dam in Gerukamukh.
Over thousands of members took to the street in Lakhimpur to voice against the BJP in power and the National Hydro Power Corporation.
They burned effigies of Prime Minster Narendra Modi, Power Minister Piyush Goyal and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The NHPC project in Gerukamukh has been facing stiff opposition in Assam, as people in the downstream areas have maintained that the big dam will have a devastating effect on their lives and livelihood.
