Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kerala’s first Metro in Kochi at Palarivattom station on Saturday.

Inaugurating the Kochi Metro rail, Prime Minister Modi said it is “futuristic infrastructure that will contribute to India’s growth.”

After inauguration PM Modi took a ride in the Metro from Palarivattom station from to Pathadippalam station. The Governor of Kerala P Sathasivam, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and the Metro man of India, E Sreedharan also travelled along with Modi.

The inaugural ceremony was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium premises.

It was the first phase of 13.2 km of the total 25 km stretch of the Kochi metro. It takes around 45 minutes to travel from Aluva to Palarivattom by roads, whereas the Metro will limit the travel time to 23 minutes. Each station on the Kochi Metro will have solar panels, which will focus on producing 35 per cent of the total power usage and will showcase a theme, such as maritime history, Western Ghats as well as the local history of the city, among others.

Kochi Metro said, the project costs an estimated Rs. 5,180 crore, the fare will vary from a minimum of Rs. 15 to a maximum of Rs. 30.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the P.N. Panicker Memorial Reading Month celebrations at St. Theresa’s college. Before leaving Kochi, Modi will also hold a meeting with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and others at the Airport.
