Hindus will be minority in Assam by 2051
Ethnic Assamese people are soon going to be a minority in their own state. Hindus will be minority in Assam by 2051 due to the rapid change in religious demography in the state, senior advocate of Supreme Court Upamanyu Hazarika said in his latest book ‘Asomor Jatra: Niraxar Pora Axaloi’.
The high influx of Muslim people from Bangladesh through the porous international border and their subsequent enrolment in the state’s electoral rolls is harming the indigenous identity of Assamese population, Hazarika mentioned in the book.
The issue of undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh has been an age-old, pesky and highly emotional subject for the ethnic Assamese population.
Muslims will be majority in Assam by 2061 and Hindus will be minority by 2051, Hazarika said citing different population growth models.
