People on Wednesday paid homage to courageous journalist and outspoken human rights activist Parag Kumar Das on his death anniversary.
The executive editor of 'Asomiya Pratidin', a largely circulated Assamese daily newspaper, Parag Kumar Das was shot dead by miscreants in Guwahati on May 17, 1996.
He gave real meaning to the word ‘investigative journalism’ in Assam. He became a terror for the corrupt system with his bold writings. There were several attempts to stifle his pen and when everything failed, he was brutally murdered.
The killing of Parag Kumar Das and its aftermath remained in the mainstream media for many years. The assassination prompted huge public outcries but his family is yet to get justice.
An unassuming, erudite man, Das was one of the founders of the human rights movement in Assam and a tireless activist who fought for the rights of the indigenous peoples of Northeast India.
Parag Kumar Das took the lead in forming MASS along with Ajit Bhuyan (President), Niloy Dutta (Advisor) and others to protest against and document the blatant human rights violations by the Indian armed forces
