Arrested Excise officer Amarendra Nath was produced before the Court of Special Judge in Guwahati on Monday. The court remanded Nath to 10 days police custody.

Nath was arrested by Assam Police in connection with the Rs. 40 crore BG bonded warehouse scam.

He was evading arrest for quite some time, was caught by a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Crime Branch from a guest house in New Delhi on June 9.

Confirming his close relation with a powerful minister of Assam for last 23 years, Amarendra Nath said in front of CID, while he was interrogated in Assam Bhawan in Delhi, that he had been betrayed by the minister.

It has been also reported that a former journalist of Assam had a secrete consultation with Amarendra in Assam Bhawan. Amarendra handed over the journalist a ‘mysterious’ 5 rupees note during the discussion.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered the ADGP of CID, AK Jha to carry the investigation process in a proper way. He further directed the ADGP to examine the call lists of the investigating officers, if needed. The CM also ordered probe to find out who had met Amarendra during his Delhi days.

Nath was one of the main accused in the CID case No. 54/15, which relates to evasion of VAT and excise revenue by forgery of documents and without adhering to the prescribed norms. The case was registered under Sections 120(B), 468/471/409 of the Indian Penal Code read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Liquor mafia Rajesh Jalan and Bonty Gogoi have already been arrested in this connection, while several others, including two IAS officers, were also quizzed.
