After BG bonded warehouse scam, another scandal has rocked the Assam excise department. Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA), used for producing distilled spirits like vodka, rum, whiskey, etc., was imported from Patiala in Punjab using forged permits.

The scam came to light after a probe by police in Haryana where one ENA supplier had lodged forgery cases against the Patiala based ENA supplier and buyers in Assam.

Copies of fake permits were handed over to Assam Excise department by Haryana Police, which bore the name of a firm, Ritu Cosmetics based in Tinsukia, deals in cosmetics and uses ENA in their products.

According to sources, there are no such firms at Gandhi Park in Tinsukia, whereas permits have been issued for around 20,000 to 25,000 bulk liters of ENA to the non-existent firm. A firm producing cosmetics products does not require so much quantity of rectified alcohol.

The forged permits bore the signature of a deputy commissioner of excise department, Pranjal Borah, who had filed a signature forgery case at Hatigaon police station in Guwahati. Hatigaon police went to the excise department and seized 30 copies of various documents.

Depending on the quantity mentioned in the permits, Excise department has lost around Rs. 1.3 crore of tax.
