Former human rights lawyer Moon Jae-In began his five-year term as president of South Korea on Wednesday, following a landslide election win after a corruption scandal felled the country’s last leader.

The newly elected President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, has been sworn in as 19th President of the country on Wednesday and vowed to immediately tackle the difficult tasks of addressing North Korea's advancing nuclear ambitions and soothing tensions with the United States and China.

Moon, the Democratic Party's candidate to replace ousted President Park Geun-hye, was declared the winner by the country's National Election Commission.

Voter turnout was at its highest in 20 years. With 100% of the votes counted, Moon won with 41.08%, the commission said.

New South Korean President, Moon Jae-in has named his nominees for Prime Minister and the country's spy chief.

Announcing his first cabinet and presidential staff appointments, PM Moon appointed South Jeolla Province Governor, Lee Nak-yon as the Prime Minister.
