Only 1 lakh of 40 lakhs left out in the NRC have applied for inclusion of their names and this has caused great concern as ambiguity remains about the documents that are considered acceptable.
National Register of Citizens (NRC) State Coordinator Prateek Hajela, in keeping with the directions of the Supreme Court, is making a power-point presentation today on his recommendation to exclude five documents.
NRC authorities insist that five basic documents have to be excluded for correct implementation of the NRC process but both Government of India and Government of Assam besides host of other organisations are of the opinion that it would disturb the genuine Indian citizen.
The Supreme Court had on Tuesday said: "to enable all the stakeholders to respond to the stand taken by Hajela in his report dated 4th October, which would require a deep insight into the mechanism of the manual family tree, as well as the computer family tree which is the basic exercise that was undertaken before preparation of the final draft NRC, we direct Prateek Hajela, learned Coordinator, NRC, Assam, to give a power-point presentation of the manner in which he had proceeded in preparation of the manual and the computer family tree for the purposes of deciding on the inclusion of names in the draft NRC."
The power-point presentation will be given by Hajela to the officials of the Government of Assam and the Union of India in the presence of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta or representative(s) authorised by him as may be and also in the presence of one representative of all the other stakeholders who agree to be represented by Kapil Sibal.
The briefing, scheduled to be held at 6 pm at the Home Ministry, is likely to be attended by Attorney General KK Venugopal, the Solicitor General who also represents the Assam Government, State Chief Secretary, besides Kapil Sibal and others.
All the written objections of the aforesaid stakeholders will be brought on record on or before October 30. The matter will be heard on November 1.
