On July 26, the nation celebrates the 19th anniversary of the 1999 Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day marked in India’s history as the day India successfully took command of the high posts previously lost to Pakistani intruders.

A three-day celebration began on Tuesday at Dras War Memorial in Kargil town in Jammu to honour the sacrifices of the soldiers martyred in the 60-day war. Tributes were paid to the War Heroes on the first day, followed by veterans sharing their war experience on the second day. The main function of the wreath laying ceremony had been held on Thursday.

Marking the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to honour the martyrs of the war saying, “On #KargilVijayDiwas, a grateful nation pays homage to all those who served the nation during Operation Vijay. Our brave soldiers ensured that India remains protected and gave a befitting answer to those who tried to vitiate the atmosphere of peace.”

Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs of India, also conveyed his gratitude to the Kargil Heroes in a tweet, “‏On #KargilVijayDivas I salute and pay tributes to the heroes of the #KargilWar. Our armed forces protect the integrity of our country with courage, commitment and sacrifice.”

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also said in a tweet, “On this #KargilVijayDiwas I salute the bravehearts who have sacrificed their lives for the future of our Nation. @PMOIndia.”
