4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Assam

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred on Friday midnight at around 1.08 am near Dhekiajuli, Sonitpur, Assam as reported by National Center for Seismology (NCS).

According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 30 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Dhekiajuli (pop. 21,300) located 8 km from the epicenter, Dhing (pop. 20,800) 29 km away, Rangapara (pop. 18,700) 30 km away, and Udalguri (pop. 15,900) 30 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Khārupatia (pop. 18,600) located 34 km from the epicenter, Tezpur (pop. 58,900) 41 km away, Dispur (pop. 10,800) 88 km away, and Guwahati (pop. 899,100) 88 km away.

On Thursday also three low intensity earthquakes hit Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter scale hit Assam's Tezpur 2.04, as per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The earthquake occurred at 2.04 am at a depth of 22 kilometres. The epicentre of the quake was located 36 kilometres West-Northwest of Tezpur.
