The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has observed a 2-hour hunger strike in Namrup demanding set up of the fourth unit of Namrup Fertilizer Plant known as Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL).
The AASU has staged the protest during the time when Commerce & Industry Ministry Chandra Mohan Patowary visited the place.
The students’ body has staged protest in front of the Convoy of Minister Patowary.
It may be mentioned that there are 4500 permanent and contractual workers in BVFCL. The first plant was set up in 1969, but it was shut down in 1986. After that, the 2nd and 3rd units were set up in 1976 and 1987 respectively, which have also expired. But credit goes to the employees of the industry who have managed to keep the industry run in a smooth way with an average production of 3.5 lakh metric tonne per year.
And to keep the plant functional in a proper way, AASU demanded to start the 4th unit soon.
