AGP mum on issue of ‘Citizenship Amendment Bill’ at Cabinet meeting

With all the opposition against the Citizenship Amendment Bill going on in Assam, AGP, who is an alliance party of the ruling government, was seen actively voicing against BJP. The party took active participation in opposing the proposed Bill. But in the cabinet meeting held in Dispur on Friday, AGP did not even bring up the concerned matter.

A day prior to the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met the three AGP Ministers – Phanibhushan Choudhury, Keshab Mahanta and Atul Bora.

During this meeting, Sonowal assured the three ministers that he will not take any decision that would prove to be detrimental to Assam and its indigenous communities, said MLA Chandra Mohan Patowary. Sonowal requested them not to bring this issue up in this meeting as they will be given a chance to do so in the next meeting of the coordination committee of BJP and its alliance partners, he added.

AGP general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita speaking to the media said, by not raising the issue in the meeting does not mean that AGP supports the Bill but showing respect to the chief minister's request, they did not bring up the issue.

"Similar protests will be held in other parts of the state later," he added.
