Although Nagaland has been officially served as a dry state for the last three decades, alcoholism and substance abuse have shown a rising trend.

Speaking at the launch of North East Artist Network (NEAN) recently, Senior Psychiatrist Dr. C Kezo said that alcohol-related ailments in Nagaland can be viewed as an evergreen disease. Among the total patients received by District Hospital Dimapur every year, almost 50 percent of patients are observed to be suffering from ailments due to excess alcoholism.

NEAN has been launched in order to include activities likeprevention, education and awareness programmes, setting up group support, sensitizationprogrammes, counseling, case study, information, education and communicationand detoxification camps.

Dr. Kezo said that a majority of alcoholic persons are found withinthe 18-60 years age group adding that since alcohol is prohibited in the state,it has only increased the sale of spurious alcohol by bootleggers.

He also stressed on the implementation of NLPT Act to stop thebootleggers from taking advantage. It may be mentioned that northeast Indiapredominantly is a tribal-dominated area and alcohol is a part of northeast'scustom and traditions as each ethnic community has its own local brew.

According to studies, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) isconsumed mostly by the people rather than the ethnic brews in Nagaland but itis not an exception as well.

Dr. Kezo further stated that alcohol abuse has always posed a seriousthreat to public health. He also said that alcohol de-addiction is a challengefor the people of the state adding that medication and motivation need to workin tandem if one wishes to de-addict from alcohol use.
