Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that people with more than two children will not be eligible for the Assam government's scheme.

The government has decided to implement population control norms in select schemes of the state government, the chief minister said.

He further added that the norms would not be applicable to all the government schemes.

"We can't implement two-child norms in free admission of children to schools or Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. But if we start a CM Awas Yojana, then this point may be applied," Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Dr. Sarma said AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has also welcomed the government moves on women's education. "Most of the people asked me how many children my parents have. The opposition wants to take back Assam 70 years back but I want to take the state forward," he added.

In 2019, the state government had decided that people with more than two children will not be eligible for government jobs.

"Those with more than two children would not be considered for government jobs from January 1, 2021," the state government had maintained.
