Assam: Community Fishing Kickstarts With Fervour In Kokrajhar

Thousands of residents living in the Ramfalbil-Serfanguri region of Dotoma in Assam's Kokrajhar gathered along the Longa River at the Ramfalbil sluice gate to participate in the annual community fishing on Monday.

The inclusive activity that has always witnessed the participation of different indigenous communities begins every year after the sluice gates of the Ramfalbil-Longa irrigation open on November 1. The sluice gate is located nearly 25 km from the Kokrajhar town and the Longa River in Assam flows all the way from Bhutan.

Locals from surrounding areas of Ramfalbil, Serfanguri, Dotoma, Gowabari, Hogomabil, Engtibil, and Banargaon are a part of the annual event.

Residents were seen catching varieties of fish bhoal, rahu, bami, kushia, puti, and other small fish. Traditional fishing gears like Koloi, Polo, and Jekhai was used to catch the fish.

For further recreation of the residents, food stalls were set up along the river and people of all ages went into the muddy waters.

Besides, Bodoland Territorial Council's sports department also organised the traditional water sport Amwl Dimwl. Almost 25 teams participated in the event.
